Black bear and cubs at Mendenhall Glacier

This is a well known black bear that frequents the Mendenhall Glacier area. People call her Nicky because of the small nick she has in her ear. She is 18 years old, and I heard someone say she has had 15 cubs. Last summer locals were concerned for her health as she looked very ragged and thin. I think many were shocked when she showed up this year with two tiny cubs. She still looks ragged, but I think she's a beauty. I was very excited when I found her and her cubs six feet off of the trail tucked under a tree enjoying a fish. After they had their fill, the entire family settled in for a nap seemingly unfazed by the crowd that had gathered to watch them. Don't worry, the bears at the glacier are monitored by the park rangers to ensure the safety of both humans and bears.
