False Outer Point

I watched a flock of crows feeding on the beach at False Outer Point.  They would pick up mussels with their beaks and then fly up into the air.  They would then release the mussel and let it fall to the ground while diving after it.  I wondered if dropping the mussel to the ground somehow breaks or opens up the shell allowing them easier access to the mussel.
