I could not believe my luck when I happened to find a Northern Pygmy-Owl. It was icing on the cake to have been able to get decent photos of it. And if that was not enough, it caught and killed a vole while I was watching it. I feel like this was a once in a lifetime experience for me as these tiny owls are difficult to find. I took far too many photos.

The wet and dreary weather combined with short daylight hours has made it difficult to get out lately. For the past two weeks we have had several short-eared owls spending time on the Mendenhall wetlands. The first week there appeared to be at least ten. This last weeks it seems as though most of them have moved on. I was only able to find two the last time I went looking for them. It was an amazing experience to be surrounded by these beautiful birds. |
